Reminder you will be building your own credit at the close of this event. Each session will count 1.2 hours towards your credit. You will collect certificates throughout the event to submit in MyLearningPlan at the conclusion of reIGNITE 2019. Digital Sessions will require the Digital Learning Artifact: bit.ly/jcpsdlcartifact.
Note: If you are attending with your PLC members you might consider signing up for the same reIGNITE Calibration session (Learn 1) so that you can have common language in the coming year.
Learning Objectives & Rationale: Participants will experience how the use of the virtual environment of the STAR Lab will help students to learn about myths, legends, and folklore. In addition, participants will learn how to utilize the STAR Lab lessons to enhance and modify other lessons or units of study. Description: Participants will go into the STAR Lab and see how constellations can be used to tell stories and discuss legends, myths, and folklore. They will learn some of the science behind the star patterns and be able to identify how that is important to the story telling. Participants will be asked to create their own myth, legend, or folktale for one of the Constellations and become a planetarium presenter. Teachers will get ideas for utilizing the STAR Lab to make connections to literature today and be able to do other reading and writing lessons as an extension from this experience. (The STAR Lab is the small dome planetarium, that the county owns, which can be borrowed to showcase different aspects of the solar system, seasons, and facts about the stars. The specific activity for this event will showcase the integration of literacy and science.) Modalities/Implementation Practices: I will model a lesson inside of the STAR Lab with participants. In the virtual environment of the STAR Lab, participants will be looking at stars and Constellations as they hear different stories about the Constellations, based on myths, seasons, folktales. Then, the participants will identify one of the Constellations or star patterns that was not discussed to come up with a myth, folktale, or legend that would explain the occurrence of that specific star pattern in the sky. In addition, I will go over the use and ideas for various lesson/units that can be enhanced by the use of the STAR Lab.
