Target Audience (Elementary, Secondary, Other):
Coaches/Leaders

Learning Objectives & Rationale:
School leaders will understand their role in the implementation of Standards-based mathematics instruction.

Description:
Have you underestimated the complexity of Standards-based mathematics instruction?  Could it be hindering student growth at your school?
The North Carolina Standard Course of Study for K-8 Mathematics set expectations for the content and skills students should master by the end of each grade and the practices in which they should use regularly, but these standards do not include directions on how to teach to meet the expectations. In order to successfully provide this type of instruction, teachers need to have a deep understanding of both the content and how students understand and learn the content (Ball, 2003; Clements & Sarama, 2004; Carpenter, Fennema, Peterson, Chiang & Loef, 1989). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics supported the creation and implementation of the common mathematics Standards and acknowledged that the shift would take time (NCTM, 2014; Hirsch, Lappan, & Reys, 2012). This means the implementation of Standards-based instruction requires training as well as time for teachers to develop new instructional strategies. In this session, school leaders will learn how to support Standards-based mathematics instruction to promote teacher and student growth.

Modalities/Implementation Practices:
This session will incorporate lecture and discussion facilitated through mathematics education research and student work samples.
