Building Our "Empathy Muscle"...Proactive Bullying Prevention AVAILABLE

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity seats available

Learning Objectives & Rationale:
1. Teachers will understand the relationship between empathy and bullying prevention.
2. Teachers will understand how empathy and social justice are connected.
3. Teachers will explore student activities that will build the “empathy muscle”.
4. Teachers will explore everyday practices to model empathy in the classroom.
Description:
Do your students frequently call each other names, make comments to embarrass one another or use language that could be hurtful to their peers...or even YOU?  Whether this is perceived as mischievous play or malicious targeting, it is wreaking havoc on the culture in your classroom and probably your sanity.  In this session, we will explore the connection between empathy and proactive bullying prevention.  You will gain insight to the importance of teaching empathy and how instrumental it can be  in creating an inclusive classroom culture where differences are valued instead of targeted.

Modalities/Implementation Practices:
Visual: Facilitators will use interactive presentation software that will be projected on a Smartboard/Smart Panel Tv/Projector.  In addition, both digital and print resources/lessons/activities/strategies will be available to each participant based on their preference and grade level.
Auditory: Facilitators will present information and model activities and best practices that teachers can take back to their classrooms.
Kinesthetic: Teachers will participant in “Cross the Line” activity which will have them up and out of their seats, moving, all while reflecting on their personal experiences with bullying and/or those of their students.
